Chalfont Fair in Buckinghamshire Shopping Directory

Over the years the Chalfont Fair has developed into a major local community event, from the early beginnings in the Priory to the current site on St. Josephs Catholic Combined School, Priory Road. The first Chalfont Fair was held in May 1945 soon after the war in Europe was declared over and everyone was in the mood for celebration. It was held to raise funds for the parish of St. Josephs, specifically to extend the small church, and to build a new school. There had been rationing for many years before, and there was a great shortage of new goods. This resulted in goods being donated, which is still popular today. This first fair, held in the grounds of The Holy Cross Convent in Chalfont St. Peter, was more than just a church fete, it had many attractions and side shows and was a huge success, making over £1000 which was a colossal amount in those days. The Fair moved to the Priory, then to the grounds of St. Josephs School, where if we have good weather, it entertains over six thousand people. The Chalfont Fair has always been run by the parishioners of St. Josephs and their friends, making it a whole community fun event. Many famous celebrities have opened the Fair, in recent years we have enjoyed the company of Patrick Mower, Jan Lemming, Ian McCaskill, John Craven and Rula Lenska to name just a few. There have been many famous main attractions including, Henry Cooper and boxing displays, flying displays, parachuting displays, motorbike displays and maybe one of the most unusual, a camel race May 2000s main attraction was the Sheep Dog Display which we all enjoyed. A Tug of War Contest between local teams has been very popular in recent years and we hear teams are in training again for this years event. For the youngest members of the family there will be plenty to keep them amused, from gokarts, roundabouts, bouncy castles, Punch & Judy and many small game stalls. The Mums will enjoy the Bric A Brac, Toiletries and Accessories stalls to name but a few. The Dads who like gardening will find plenty to grow plus books, computers, records, tapes etc. and when they get tired and thirsty, the beer tent will be a popular resting place. There will be plenty to eat hot dogs, hamburgers, chips and refreshments, and you wont want to go home without a delicious homemade cake. For over fifty years the theme has always been the same, to provide FUN FAMILY FINANCE in that order, and we are working to provide a great day out for all the family.
